Edward started playing cornet with the Ballymacarrett Mountpottinger Corps of
the Salvation Army in the late 1960’s. Moving via Trombone he ended up on
Solo Euphonium at the age of 16, playing most of the popular Salvation Army
Solos of the time. At the age of 19 he left the Army and joined the First Old
Boys on Eb Bass. He was a member of the band that won the All Ireland
Championship in 1979. Leaving Belfast to pursue his career Edward didn’t
play for 15 years and only returned to banding when his children reached the
age to play musical instruments. Edward and his family, Adam, Janine,
Amy and Hazel joined Newtownards in 1998, and Edward returned to his first
love the Euphonium. He is a regular soloist with the band and in the last two
concerts returned to his roots playing ‘We’ll All Shout Hallelujah’ an old
Salvation Army favourite. Edward and his family, as a five piece ensemble
won the street musicians competition during the 2006 Armagh summer school.
